Level 1 Referee Requirements:
Every official starts at Level 1 and masters increasingly complex rules and field assignments in order to reach Level 2 and 3.
Once you are an official, you must maintain your eligibility each year by renewing your memberships in US Lacrosse and Northern California Lacrosse Referees Association (NCLRA), attending the appropriate clinics and passing the written rules and mechanics test.
General requirements for being an NCLRA official:
1. You must be at least 15 years old by May 31, 2012 (and at least two years older than those players you will officiate).
2. Pay your one time registration fee of $75.00. Please use Paypal, or make your check out to NCLRA, and send to:

3. Join US Lacrosse. Membership is $35.00 - $50.00.
4. You must also participate in two Level 1 lacrosse clinics. Each clinic with have both classroom and field training. Your performance in these clinics will be evaluated by NCLRA trainers and the results shared with you.
3. Pass a written rules and mechanics test administered by US Lacrosse.
4. Purchase a basic official's uniform and timer from the vendor of your choice. Suggestions are below:
5. New Level 1 referees will receive their game assignments directly from Steve Walker, Assignor for NCJLA - 415-279-0492. Steve will also introduce you to a Mentor to help with the process and support you on the field.

In addition to basic requirements, there are guidelines to help you move up the ladder and be eligible for officiating more complex (and higher paying) games.
Level 2 and Level 3 Referee Requirements:
1. Participate in Level 2 and Level 3 clinics and receive evaluations meeting or exceeding expectations.
2. Pass written rules and mechanics tests for Level 2 and 3.
3. Be a member in good standing of US Lacrosse and Northern California Lacrosse Referees Association.
4. Be able to access the Internet on a regular basis, maintain a current, active and unique email address and availability for games via the Arbiter (arbitersports.com) game assignment system, and also maintain a phone number by which you can be reached.
5. Receive a recommendation from your assigned Mentor and Chief Assignor.
Guidelines
> Be Punctual.
> Develop a positive and respectful reputation with coaches, players, parents and fellow officials.
> Know and apply a thorough understanding of the rules. Understand the principles of conflict resolution, and ensure the safety of all participants.
> Learn to communicate and be an example of the game's historic values of respect and honor while on the field.
> Exhibit good judgment. Practice a sense of humor and fair play.
> Know when to let them play the game.
